In the interview held within the scope of summer activities, municipality staff Archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu discussed the archaeological heritage of Turgutreis and its surroundings. Information was provided on cultural assets from the Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman periods, especially the Lelegian cities of Termera Ancient City and the Strobilos (Aspat) settlement. In addition, the region's agricultural production history, trade network, windmills, agricultural terraces, cisterns, wells, rock tombs, churches and volcanic craters were conveyed to the participants with visuals.
Bodrum Mayor Tamer Mandalinci was represented by Deputy Mayor Ahmet Yıldızhan, Turgutreis Neighborhood Headman Hasan Gökhan Satılmış and citizens who attended the event.
Speaking at the interview, Archaeologist Serap Topaloğlu stated that Turgutreis draws attention not only with its natural beauties but also with its multi-layered settlement history dating back thousands of years. Expressing that Turgutreis, the western gate of Bodrum, has a cultural continuity starting from the Lelegians and extending to the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods, Topaloğlu drew attention to the fact that the region is not limited to the ancient period but also bears important traces in traditional culture.
Topaloğlu emphasized that this cultural diversity, ranging from sponge diving to agriculture, stone architecture to maritime trade, shaped Bodrum’s historical identity, and said, “Understanding the past means reconstructing the present and the future. Understanding and protecting this heritage is a common responsibility for all of us. With the support of our President, we aim to raise awareness of Bodrum’s cultural tourism and its potential with the cultural tours and talks we have organized this year.”
At the end of the talk, the participants had the opportunity to ask questions about the history of the region. The participants expressed their satisfaction with the cultural talks initiated by Bodrum Municipality for the first time this year and thanked Mayor Tamer Mandalinci for his efforts to protect the historical heritage of the city.
