The history of the Çanakkale historical site is being rewritten in the light of Ottoman records

The Gallipoli Campaign Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency has made a new publication available to the public that brings to light the historical heritage of the region. This comprehensive study, titled “Demographic Structure of the Historical Area”, provides a detailed analysis of the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the Gallipoli Peninsula based on 19th century Ottoman population registers.

Archive documents were translated into modern Turkish

The Ottoman population registers from 1841 and 1844, which are kept in the State Archives of the Republic of Turkey, were meticulously examined by expert teams and translated into modern Turkish. Thus, it has become a resource that both academics and history enthusiasts can easily benefit from.

Population, ethnic structure and socio-economic data are available in such detail for the first time.

The study provides important information about the settlement distribution, ethnic origins, religious structure and economic activities of the population living in the Gallipoli Peninsula in the 19th century. In this way, a scientific basis is created that will shed light on the history of the region.

A valuable reference source for academic research

The new publication is both a reference source for academic studies and a must-read for those interested in the region's past. Prepared in light of historical documents, this study offers a unique perspective to those who want to understand the multicultural and multilayered structure of Gallipoli.
