One of the important names in the Turkish press, journalist and writer Hikmet Çetinkaya, has passed away at the age of 83. Çetinkaya, who was a columnist for Cumhuriyet newspaper for many years and left his mark in the profession with over 50 years of experience, had been intubated due to ongoing health problems for some time. WHO IS HİKMET ÇETİNKAYA? Çetinkaya was born in 1942 in the Edremit district of Balıkesir. He addressed his readers for many years in his column called Politika Günlüğü on page 5 of Cumhuriyet newspaper. He is known as a writer who travels from province to province and reports on developments in Turkey through his observations. He is known for his articles on the sect-commerce-politics triangle. He was the editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet newspaper between 2000-2005. He served as the publication coordinator of the same newspaper for a period and was among the board members of the Cumhuriyet Foundation. He is a founding member of the Human Rights Institution of Turkey (TİHAK). Çetinkaya, who continues to write columns in the Politics Journal on page 5 of the newspaper, was deemed worthy of the Burhan Felek Press Service Award, given by the Turkish Journalists Association to those who have been in journalism for more than 50 years, in 2014.
