Google will merge Android and ChromeOS

Google aimed to accelerate AI integration and increase interaction, including on smartphones, with the innovations it introduced to ChromeOS in 2024. In November 2024, reports emerged that Google was bringing ChromeOS to Android to compete with iPads, which had completely replaced laptops for some users.

In light of this, a new announcement confirmed that Google will merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform. This development, confirmed by Android ecosystem president Samir Samat in a statement to TechRadar, will also be addressed by studies on how and why users use their laptops.

Although news about the merger of the two operating systems first emerged in 2015, a Google executive has now officially confirmed it.
