Earning this tier requires 2,000 status credits annually, with at least 1,500 earned on Virgin Australia-operated or codeshare flights. The move comes as Virgin refines its loyalty program, while some Platinum-level benefits will be adjusted to reflect the new hierarchy.
Qantas to roll out free WiFi on trans-Tasman flightsQantas has announced it will begin offering free inflight WiFi on flights to New Zealand from mid-2025, extending its connectivity offering beyond domestic routes. The rollout will begin with upgrades to the airline’s Boeing 737s, using Viasat satellite technology that supports both Australian and international coverage. This follows the ongoing upgrade of Qantas’ A330 fleet, already providing WiFi on routes to South-East Asia.
Virgin Australia achieves fourth consecutive month of industry-leading on-time performanceVirgin Australia has been named Australia’s most punctual major airline for the fourth month in a row, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics report released on 22 April 2025. The airline also recorded a 4.5% increase in services compared to February, operating 395 daily flights throughout March. Despite the temporary disruptions caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred across key Queensland and Northern NSW airports, Virgin Australia maintained a 98.8% completion rate for scheduled domestic flights.
Temporary lounge changes for Qantas travellers in AucklandQantas has officially closed its Auckland International Lounge to make way for a brand-new, premium space opening in early 2026. During the construction period, First, Business, Platinum One, and Platinum Frequent Flyers will have access to the Emirates Lounge, while Gold Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members can relax in the Strata Lounge. Air New Zealand unveils first retrofitted 787-9 DreamlinerAir New Zealand’s first fully retrofitted Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner has landed in Auckland, featuring redesigned interiors across all cabins, including the introduction of the new Business Premier Luxe seat. The aircraft spent 184 days in Singapore undergoing the upgrade, following 18 months of research and extensive customer testing. This marks the beginning of a fleet-wide transformation, with seven aircraft to be completed by the end of 2025 and all 14 Dreamliners upgraded by the end of 2026. Qantas Adelaide business class lounge soon to openFrom Friday 16 May 2025, the Adelaide Qantas business Lounge officially opens its doors to business class passengers and platinum-grate frequent flyers. Located with the airline’s Adelaide lounge precinct, the new lounge will offer a spacious open plan footprint adorned with design inspired by Kangaroo Island’s Flinders Chase National Park . Travellers can enjoy Sout Australian food and wine and can also charge up tech products with ead access to USB A and USB-C power outlets and wireless charging mats.
Emirates brings A350 and premium economy to AdelaideFrom 1 December, Emirates will upgrade its Adelaide–Dubai service from the Boeing 777 to the modern Airbus A350. This upgrade will deliver a significantly enhanced experience for passengers, with benefits including quieter cabins for a more restful journey, reduced in-flight fatigue thanks to a lower effective cabin altitude, and increased humidity levels to help prevent skin dryness. The new aircraft will also introduce Emirates’ Mercedes S Class inspired Business Class, along with the addition of Premium Economy seating, offering greater comfort and choice for travellers.
Qantas confirms plans for Western Sydney Airport launch in 2026Qantas has announced it will operate domestic services from Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) from late 2026, beginning with QantasLink E190 regional jets. Up to 15 aircraft from Qantas and Jetstar are expected to be based at the airport, supporting around four million passengers annually. A Qantas Club lounge is also planned for the terminal, while international services will commence with Singapore Airlines offering overnight flights to Singapore. WSI’s 24-hour operations and strategic location aim to offer time-saving options for business travellers across Western Sydney.
Qantas to resume direct Perth flights to Auckland and JohannesburgQantas is expected to restart direct flights from Perth to Auckland and Johannesburg from December this year, according to operational schedules filed with aviation authorities. Each route will operate three times per week using Airbus A330 aircraft with lie-flat business class seating. The move supports Qantas’ strategy to establish Perth as a western gateway for international travel, ahead of a new terminal development at Perth Airport.
TDAC Thailand Digital Card ArrivalThe Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is now available, replacing the traditional paper arrival card process. Travellers can now complete their arrival information online, helping to streamline entry into Thailand. Effective 1 May, all foreign travellers, regardless of visa status or length of stay, must complete the TDAC before entering Thailand.

New LAX baggage rules set to streamline international transfersAmerican Airlines has launched a new trial that could eliminate the need for international travellers to re-check luggage at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Under the Remote Baggage Screening pilot, bags checked in from Sydney will now automatically transfer to connecting flights within the U.S., bypassing the usual baggage claim and re-check process. The program is being run in partnership with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Sydney Airport, aiming to simplify onward travel while maintaining stringent security protocols. If successful, the initiative may roll out to other cities, offering a more seamless experience for business travellers connecting through LAX.
Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways partner on SAF project in North QueenslandVirgin Australia and Qatar Airways have announced a new partnership with Renewable Developments Australia to support the development of a homegrown Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production facility in North Queensland. The proposed site will use locally grown sugarcane to produce up to 96 million litres of SAF annually, targeting a 70% reduction in lifecycle emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy and is expected to begin SAF delivery from 2029.
