AI Made in China: Watch Out for Moonshot AI's Kimi K2

Earlier this year, Chinese startup DeepSeek captured global attention with the public launch of its AI. Today, another Chinese team threatens to steal the show: Moonshot AI , which is already flexing its muscles with its Kimi K2 .

This is a large, open -source model with a trillion parameters, capable of outperforming rivals such as OpenAI's GPT-4.1 (placing just behind Claude Sonnet 4) in the first benchmarks run with SWE-bench Verified, LiveCodeBench, and OJBench. Specifically, the Kimi K2 Instruct version, optimized for real-world use, was tested, requiring it to identify and correct errors in portions of code.

The AI also performs very well when asked to perform math and science-related tasks, as well as generating complex drawings in SVG format, a task that usually challenges these systems, leading to the creation of abstract shapes. The project leaders state that it is a model specifically designed for agent AI , meaning it can execute commands, interface with external applications and tools, generate and debug code. More generally, it can handle complex, multi-step actions completely independently. One demonstration provided shows the system analyzing employee salary information and performance statistics, subsequently creating an interactive HTML page containing a tool to recommend improvements.
