Sala prepares his defense in the city council as Tancredi nears resignation.
Another meeting took place between Mayor Giuseppe Sala, under investigation in the Milan urban planning investigation, and his councilor Giancarlo Tancredi, for whom the prosecutor's office has requested house arrest. The decision on his possible resignation will likely be announced Monday at the city council meeting.
Although calls for Sala's resignation have come from the opposition, more so at the local level than at the national level—given that even Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said Sala will have to make his own assessment and not necessarily resign—the center-left majority has expressed solidarity and, in some ways, a desire to reappoint him. Yesterday, Democratic Party Secretary Elly Shlein also spoke out, following a phone call to Sala the day before.
"The news about the Milan investigation has not left us indifferent and demands attention. It is also important for us to fully understand the precise details of this affair. We have faith in the work of the judiciary, which will have to determine whether there was any individual criminal responsibility. At the same time, we reiterate that the Democratic Party stands by Mayor Sala, whom I spoke to directly express our solidarity, and continues to support the administration's work over the next two years." He then adds that the new challenges "have become more pressing and urgent and require signs of innovation and change," which seems to suggest a rapid cabinet reshuffle. The call for change also comes from the Milan Democrats, who met with the mayor in the last few hours.
Sala also receives the support of Matteo Renzi and +Europa, but not that of Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement.
Meanwhile, the investigation could create tensions over projects on which decisions should be made quickly: the San Siro stadium and the Olympic Village. Investigative documents reveal that there were many appetites surrounding the Meazza redevelopment—just as the City is about to finalize a sales agreement with Inter and AC Milan for the construction of a new stadium with real estate investments in the area. Some members of the City Landscape Commission, which has been targeted by investigators, along with business friends, were awaiting the outcome of the political decisions to find space for their own businesses, a clear conflict of interest, investigators note.
