7.5 magnitude earthquake in Chile triggers tsunami warning: evacuations called

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:58 a.m. this Friday south of Puerto Williams, in the Cape Horn area of ​​the Magallanes Region, Chile.

For this reason, the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response (Senapred) ordered the evacuation of coastal areas due to the threat of a tsunami, a directive also endorsed by President Gabriel Boric.

“We are calling for the evacuation of the coast throughout the Magallanes region . At this time, it is our duty to take precautions and follow the instructions of the authorities. Both the regional and national COGRID are beginning. All state resources are available,” he said via X.

The epicenter was located 218 kilometers south of Puerto Williams, at a depth of ten kilometers below the seabed.
