The blue village of Tunisia that inspired the German painter Paul Klee

Just over two hours from Spain, Tunisia is one of the most attractive destinations for a relaxing vacation. Located between the Mediterranean and the desert, its rich history, stunning landscapes, and very affordable prices make this North African country one of the best options for an exotic and relaxing vacation. In addition to the bustling medinas of Tunis and Sousse, declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, we must add Sidi Bou Said , a small town 20 kilometers from Tunis, a city that surprises with its spectacular setting and timeless charm, which has inspired numerous artists.

Between mint teas, golden sandy beaches, and a warm atmosphere, this coastal town offers a unique immersion for those seeking a special place overlooking the Mediterranean. The first thing that strikes you about Sidi Bou Said is its bucolic appearance and its characteristic doors and windows painted in a deep blue , an urban landscape reminiscent of the idyllic Greek town of Santorini and the Moroccan city of Chefchaouen.

Exploring its whitewashed cobbled streets, you'll enjoy typically Moorish architecture and magnificent views of the sea. Rue Habib Thameur is the main street, where you'll find the main craft shops, restaurants, and cafés, such as the famous Café des Nattes , with its typically Moorish architecture. Numerous intellectuals and artists, including Gustave Flaubert, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Paul Klee, who captured the beauty and color of this Tunisian village on his canvases, have frequented the area.

The next stop is the Dar El Annabi palace-museum , the former summer residence of an upper-class family originally from Andalusia who had settled in Tunisia since the 18th century. In the 1960s, this traditional house with a white facade and striking blue doors was transformed into a museum. From its rooftop, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views, with the rooftops of Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, and the bay in the background.

Other attractions include the Sidi Bou Said Mosque and the Ennejma Ezzahra Palace , built at the beginning of the last century and a masterpiece of Arabic architecture. This magnificent building houses the Center for Arabic and Mediterranean Music. You'll be amazed by its brilliantly decorated interior, featuring mosaics and elegant arches. You'll also be enchanted by the stunning panoramic views it offers, as it sits high on the hill.

The best beaches in Sidi Bou Said

If you want to complete your visit by spending a few hours by the sea, just below the village are the two main beaches: Sidi Bou Said and Amilcar, both with fine sand, crystal-clear waters, and a lively atmosphere . We also recommend two other beaches that are nearby, but you'll need to drive there: La Marsa and Gammarth.

A historic cafe with a view

And we can't think of a better way to conclude this visit than by enjoying one of the most beautiful sunsets from the terrace of the Café des Délices . Located high above Sidi Bou Said, this café, which has been open since the 1960s, offers the best views of the Gulf of Tunis while enjoying a typical mint tea with pine nuts, accompanied by delicious Tunisian pastries.

How to get to Sidi Bou Said

An easy and cheap way is to take the train from Tunis-Goulette-Marsa (TGM) station, and you'll be in this village in just 30 minutes. Another option is to hire a taxi; it costs around 10 euros and takes less than 20 minutes.
