Border controls on the German and Lithuanian borders have been extended

On Friday, a decision was made to extend border controls on the German and Lithuanian borders until October 4. The issued regulation has been submitted to the European Commission for notification, Minister of Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński announced on Sunday.

The situation at the borders was the subject of a briefing with voivodes and heads of services, during which Minister Kierwiński spoke about closing the eastern route to "illegal migration".

"The 98 percent tightness of our dam means that Belarusian and Russian services, as well as illegal migration, are moving to other sections," he said.

- Today, the fundamental issue, not only for us, but for our partners in the European Union is to close, if I may use such a word, the trail that has moved to Lithuania and Latvia - he added.

Hence, he explained, the reintroduction of temporary border controls at the German and Lithuanian borders and the decision to extend them for another two months. "On Friday, the relevant regulation was issued and submitted to the European Commission for notification," he said.

The controls, Kierwiński added, are to remain in effect until October 4. "In September, we will decide on the next steps in this regard based on data from the Border Guard, military, and police," he said.
