Tragedy in Police. Young man dies.

Tragedy in Police. Young man dies.

On Saturday night, an altercation allegedly broke out in front of a liquor store on Wyszyńskiego Street in Police (West Pomeranian Voivodeship), resulting in the death of a young man. Julia Szozda, spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Szczecin, confirmed the incident to PAP.

An incident involving a knife was committed; the injured young man died in hospital, Szozda reported. She added that investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

Neither the Police District Police Headquarters nor the prosecutor's office have yet provided any information as to whether the perpetrator of the knife attack has been identified or arrested.

According to unofficial information published on social media, among others, an altercation occurred outside a 24-hour liquor store in Police, and the perpetrator, who used a knife, fled. A search is underway, police are interviewing witnesses, and security footage from nearby properties is being secured.

Local media reports that the 24-hour store on Wyszyńskiego Street in Police is the site of frequent police interventions, with incidents of disturbances and vandalism reported by local residents.

As PAP has established, city councilor Waldemar Bubiłek submitted an interpellation on this matter to Police Mayor Krystian Kowalewski on June 23rd. Citing conversations with residents and the district police officer, he wrote that "public order disturbances regularly occur in the area surrounding the store." He emphasized that the worst incidents occur on weekends and during mass events held in Police.

“What is particularly disturbing is that the Police have documented cases of selling alcohol to intoxicated persons,” Bubiłek noted.

He appealed to the mayor to initiate a procedure "to withdraw the permit to sell alcoholic products to this entity."

In response to an interpellation on July 4, the chairman of the City Council in Police, Artur Echaust, informed that administrative proceedings were already underway to withdraw ex officio the permits for the sale of alcoholic beverages in this store.

Nighttime prohibition, or a ban on selling alcohol after 10 or 11 p.m., has already been implemented by approximately 180 Polish cities and municipalities. From August 8th, a ban on selling alcohol outside the point of purchase (between 10 a.m. and 6 a.m.) will apply in Szczecin.
