Cyclaveiro calls for «real transformation of urban mobility»

Cyclaveiro calls for «real transformation of urban mobility»
The association understands that municipal support for its initiatives would increase its impact on changing the population's mobility habits.

Ciclaveiro - Associação pela Mobilidade Urbana em Bicicleta regrets that the Aveiro City Council does not support projects such as PéPedal and others developed by the Aveiro NGO, «concrete examples of initiatives that encourage behavior change, involving the local community and school communities in promoting the safe daily use of bicycles». Instead, the local authority “continues to choose to support initiatives of a sporting and competitive nature, translated into specific events that do not in any way alter the mobility habits of children and young people”, says the association regarding the announcement of the support granted by the local authority to the programme Cycling goes to School and the Women's Tour of Portugal by Bicycle. Ciclaveiro has been «continuously, resiliently and despite significant budgetary challenges, promoting true active mobility in the city» thanks to projects such as Casa da Bicicleta, PéPedal, Academia Mini Rodas and KidicalMass. «The impact of these actions», notes the association chaired by Maria Miguel Galhardo, «would be significantly increased if the local authority's concern also translated into consistent support for these initiatives and the creation of real conditions of safety and accessibility for citizens who want, but are unable, to use bicycles as a means of transport in the city». PéPedal, for example, aims to encourage people to travel to school by bicycle or on foot, promoting “active mobility habits among children and families”, with “benefits for health, well-being, citizen autonomy, environmental balance and territorial sustainability”. The local authority, the group complains, “has not seen any merit in this project that deserves financial or even institutional support”, arguing that having the municipality as an institutional partner “would allow the project’s impact on the community to be leveraged”.

The objective of this and other Ciclaveiro initiatives is to contribute to the “real transformation of urban mobility” and to change the “mobility paradigm based on the use of private cars”.
