Swimming in the sea after a storm and heavy rain can cause great harm to health and irreparable consequences, said Irina Lyalina, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the State University of Education. She shared her opinion in a conversation with Lenta.ru.
Lyalina said that after a storm, the water in the sea becomes turbid and brown due to suspended particles of sand, silt and blooming algae. If the storm is accompanied by precipitation, a large amount of pollutants from the shore enter the sea with runoff rainwater, she added. According to her, this could be garbage, oil products, pesticides.
"All this leads to bacteriological pollution of sea water, especially since organic materials washed out into the sea by rain and storms create favorable conditions for the reproduction of bacteria. The level of bacteria and pathogens in sea water during this period, as a rule, increases significantly," the expert said.
Another dangerous factor, the biologist said, is the formation of strong currents and high waves, which makes swimming life-threatening. Lyalina warned that it is better to swim in the sea 24-48 hours after a storm, until the water clears up and becomes safe.
Earlier, biologist Lyalina named simple products that cleanse the blood of toxins. She put vegetables and greens first on this list.
