Lagos Cultural Center hosts Paula Rego exhibition

During more than six decades of work, Paula Rego (1935–2022) retreated to her childhood world, a place she never abandoned and which directly drove her creative determination to build a unique figurative territory.
In this universe of fabulous creatures and the stories she imagines for them, the artist builds her world of fantasy and enchantment, thus giving them a magical and revealing power that is also typical of traditional tales and fairy tales. In her pictorial narratives, her inner visions overlap with what is described in the original stories, exploring more deeply the memory of childhood experiences.
The exhibition will present a selection of works by the artist from the Cascais City Council Collection/ Fundação D. Luís I/ Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, which “take us back to the places of our childhood”.
Recreating a fantasy world of make-believe, just like the fantastic story of Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, the 21 etchings and aquatints from the homonymous series, produced in 1992 and considered one of the most significant series of her graphic work, will be presented, as well as other prints by the artist inspired by legends, fairy tales and traditional tales, in which children are the protagonists.
The exhibition «Paula Rego: Neverland» can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm.
The exhibition, on display in exhibition rooms 2 and 3, is organized by Lagos City Council with the support of the Directorate-General for the Arts and the Network of Portuguese Theatres and Cinemas.
Admission is free.
