Microsoft has begun testing a text formatting feature in its free Notepad editor, as TechRadar has noticed .

New features of the oldest program built into Windows have become available to some users. The function allows the simplest editor to format text - add headings and subheadings, create bulleted and numbered lists, highlight text in bold. Also, the ability to add hyperlinks has appeared in Notepad.

Media journalists noted that formatting functions were previously available only in the paid program Microsoft Word. They emphasized that "Notepad" has always been a free alternative to advanced text editors, which is why users valued it.

The article says that some computer owners have reacted negatively to the new feature. "I hate this. Notepad should be simple - one font, nothing extra," said Reddit user LegendMotherfuckurrr. "We're waiting for Bing search to be added to the program," joked the author under the nickname CallMeMoon.

TechRadar's authors concluded that Microsoft has allowed the formatting function to be disabled - this can be done in the program's settings.

At the end of May, Windows 11 added an updated Notepad editor with support for artificial intelligence (AI). AI features work with a paid Copilot subscription.
