The losses of Azerbaijani business due to the loss of the Russian market as a result of the political conflict will amount to almost 1.2 billion dollars. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to data from the UN Comtrade platform.
These conclusions were made against the backdrop of the fact that last year Azerbaijan exported goods worth $26.6 billion, of which 4.4 percent went to Russia.
Russian exports to Azerbaijan are three times higher — $3.6 billion, but if we consider them as shares of total exports, they are five times lower — only 0.8 percent. Thus, the collapse of mutual trade will not be critical for both countries.
The conflict between Russia and Azerbaijan flared up last week after mass arrests of citizens of the republic in the Sverdlovsk region, suspected of "a number of murders and attempted murders." Two of the detainees died, while law enforcement officials did not take responsibility for the incident.
In Baku, the actions of the Russian security forces were assessed as persecution on ethnic grounds, after which several Russians were detained in Azerbaijan itself. Among them were the head of the editorial board of Sputnik Azerbaijan (the news agency, like RIA Novosti, is part of the MIA Rossiya Segodnya) Igor Kartavykh and editor-in-chief Yevgeny Belousov , who are suspected of fraud, illegal entrepreneurship and legalization of property acquired by criminal means.
Earlier, Alexander Knobel, Director of the Center for International Trade Research at the Presidential Academy, said that the trade conflict with Azerbaijan threatens Russia with rising prices for tomatoes. In total imports, the share of Azerbaijani tomatoes is 30-35 percent, and the loss will be especially noticeable in the winter months.
